BLV Services

Our Blind and Low Vision (BLV) team includes itinerant Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), Orientation and Mobility Specialists (O&Ms), specially trained Para-Educators and a Braillist. Our dedicated staff have expertise in early intervention and early childhood special education (EI/ECSE), multiple disabilities, assistive technology, and much more. Together, we provide the services listed below.
Evaluation and Program Planning
- Assessment and eligibility determination for Visual Impairment, in collaboration with IEP teams
 - Evaluation in areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum
 - IEP development, including goal writing, identifying accommodations and modifications
 - Student-centered collaboration, working with both school and community-based service providers
 
Teaching Compensatory Skills

- Braille reading and writing
 - Print access
 - Use of low vision devices
 - Use of assistive technology for the visually impaired
 - Auditory skill training
 
Curriculum Adaptation
- Providing accessible lesson materials, including braille, tactile graphics, and models
 - Working with school staff to devise and implement alternative instructional and assessment techniques
 
Providing Accessible Materials and Equipment
- Textbooks in braille, large print, digital and/or audio formats
 - Low vision equipment including near and distance magnifiers, bold-line paper and slant boards
 - Tactile materials such as braille rulers, raised line drawings and maps
 - Selected technology developed for the visually impaired
 
Orientation and Mobility Services: Safe, Efficient, and Independent Travel
- Cane travel skills

 - Concept development
 - Route planning
 - Use of travel tools, including monocular, accessible maps, compass and GPS
 - Use of public transportation
 
Consultative Services
- Training and support for classroom teachers and other school staff
 - Teaming with IEP team members, including parents and other specialists
