Setting up Home Instruction for Students with ASD
A How-to Guide for Parents
INTRODUCTION
During closures, schools are providing online teaching and learning materials for students to use at home. For students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there are practical strategies and tools that you can use to help your child stay engaged and motivated to learn and complete tasks. The suggestions in this guide are research-based.
Does your child need help understanding that he or she is doing school at home during closures? A social story may help. We have one written for younger children and one for older students.
The first point we want to emphasize to parents is that we know this is a very difficult and stressful time for many families. We are in the midst of a crisis and you are doing the best you can. Many parents are feeling overwhelmed. You should not feel as if you must replicate your child's school program at home. However it will be helpful for your child to have one or more portions of each weekday when they are engaged in some type of structured schoolwork or learning opportunity. We hope this guide will help.
As you review the tips in this guide, do not feel that you must implement everything at once. Start small. If you are only able to do one suggestion from one these pages, that is ok. Remember to take care of yourself. Here are a few resources on self-care and support:
